It took me a good drive before arriving at the Coconut Creek home in the cul-de-sac. The home wasnât a big one, however, it was small and well kept. The landscaping was well kept, and two cars were in the driveway. One was the newer Lexus truck, and another was a Nissan Altima coupe. This neighborhood was another quiet one as well, but quiet didnât mean let your guard down either. I rang the doorbell and waited for an answer.
âWho is it?â I heard from the other side of the door. It sounded like it could be her. I refused to say who I was though. Instead, I knocked again and this time, she opened the door. Now the only separation between us was the screen door. I came face to face with the nurse, meanwhile, she looked like sheâd seen a ghost.
Her lips immediately started to tremble. One of those bonnets covered her hair and she wore one of those colorful Mumu dresses that women loved to wear when they lounged around the house. Suga had a few of those herself, thatâs how I know about them. The aroma of warm peach cobbler hit my nostrils when she opened the screen door. âI canât believe itâs you. I just canât believe it. Come on and get your handsome self in here so I can explain everything.â
Iâve never in my life had a big mama, but I imagined if I had one, she would probably be like her. For the first time in my life, my heart didnât want to be cold with a stranger because she was warm and welcoming like a grandmother.
âWith all due respect maâam, I wonât enter your home until I know what this is about.â I informed her standing solid in one place praying that this wasnât a hoax, and I didnât have to kill her.
Instead of being offended, she smiled. âYep, youâre Triceâs child.â To loosen the tension and bring some sort of comfort she stepped out on the porch with me instead and gently closed the screen door behind her before taking a seat on the woven porch bench. I stood in the same spot.
She looked up and gazed at me with loving eyes. She didnât even know me and had that look. âWell, I guess you're right about that, so I just want to explain.â She paused for a second so she could wave at her neighbors walking by before she continued. âThere is no easy way to say this, but I know exactly who you are. As a matter of fact, I spent a few years searching for you after Trice passed away.â
âHow did you know her?â I questioned. I know what Booney told me, but I wanted to make sure it added up with whatever she was about to say.
âWellâ¦â she started. âIâm the nurse who was assigned to Trice during her stay at the rehabilitation center, Miss Missy. She spoke about you all the time because she loved her boy.
